USAC recap – Sept. 9

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. During summer, council meetings take place Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students. Watch a live stream of the meeting on the USAC Live! YouTube channel.

Agenda

  • The council unanimously approved contingency programming allocations.
  • Cheryl Sims, the associate director of Residential Life, will serve as an administrative representative for USAC this year, following the retirement of former administrative representative Berky Nelson.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President Devin Murphy said he plans to meet with UCLA administrators about his office initiatives and priorities for the year, as well as racial profiling by law enforcement. Murphy added that he wants to host a USAC open house event at the start of the school year.
  • External Vice President Conrad Contreras said that he recently attended the UCSA Board of Directors meeting, where board members talked about goals and the organization’s campaigns for the year. He said the board plans to wait until after the UC Regents meeting this month to decide how to address certain University funding topics, such as tuition costs. He added that his office issued a press release this week against a lawsuit that aims to bar the UC from providing in-state tuition and financial aid to undocumented students.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Allyson Bach said members of her office are organizing meeting times for the quarter and she is currently planning the staff retreat as well as preparing office initiatives for the year.
  • Facilities Commissioner Carlos Quintanilla said that he and Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich are reaching out to the Graduate Students Association LGBT affairs director to discuss an initiative to increase the number of gender inclusive bathrooms on campus. They also plan to reach out to Jack Pawazek, administrative vice chancellor, about the initiative.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said she went to the UCSA Congress last month, where she helped launch UConsent, a campaign against sexual violence on UC campuses which she says is an extension of the 7,000 in Solidarity campaign at UCLA. She added that UConsent will help serve as a platform for students to voice their recommendations to UC administrators about the handling of reported sexual assaults on campuses.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Greg Kalfayan said that tables have been reserved for USAC offices at the Enormous Activities Fair.
