Art workshops held at Hammer

The Hammer Museum invites high school students to their weekend
workshops, one exploring the ideas of media art and another
exploring drawing aids.

“Creating a Message for Modern Media,” led by
C.O.L.A. artist Barbara Carrasco, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1
p.m.

The workshop will examine messages conveyed through television.
Participants will look at her portrayals of angels as messengers
frozen in time on a television screen, and will then be able to use
oil pastels to create their own messenger appropriated from modern
media.

“Drawing Like the Masters,” led by photography
instructor Joan Dooley, will allow participants to explore drawing
aids like camera obscura and the camera lucida. The workshop will
tie in David Hockney’s newest works at “Likeness:
Recent Portrait Drawings by David Hockney.” Participants will
then be able to construct similar devices to practice their own
drawing skills.

Space is limited for these free programs. Advance reservations
are required. The Hammer Museum is located at 10899 Wilshire Blvd.,
Los Angeles. For information, call (310) 443-7042.
