UCSA recap – June 28

The University of California Student Association represents almost all undergraduate and graduate student governments at UC campuses. The organization’s Board of Directors typically meets every month at a different UC campus.

Agenda

  • After a public comment, the board passed a motion to have an emergency meeting on student regent-designate nominee Avi Oved, a fourth-year economics student at UCLA, with a 8-2-1 vote.
  • UC Riverside Dean of Students Susan Allen Ortega and UC Riverside Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs James Sandoval presented to the board about how the UC is currently in the process of coming up with recommendations on how to address sexual assaults on campus.
  • UCSA set a goal to register about 32,600 new voters, including 5,000 from UCLA, for the midterm election in November.
  • UCSA approved the administrative calendar for the next year. Sean Connelly, a legislative director for UCSA, said there will not be a regents meeting in Sacramento next year.
  • The board chose to continue Invest in Graduation, Not Incarceration, Transform Education campaign, or IGNITE, as an undergraduate campaign for the next year. One more undergraduate campaign will be chosen at the UCSA Congress in August.
  • UCSA approved a motion to give four votes each to UC San Diego and UCLA, and one vote to UC Santa Barbara for the United States Student Association National Student Congress in August.
  • UCSA passed a motion to have all individual governments investigate campus policies on campaign finances and elections codes to better understand campaign finances and election tactics.

Officer reports

  • UCSA President Kareem Aref said he received a letter from Judy Sakaki, vice president for student affairs for the UC Office of the President, about students arrested during a UC Student-Workers Union strike in April. Sakaki said in the letter that the UC will see what happens next regarding those students.
  • UCSA Board Chair Safeena Mecklai said she is trying to hire an organizing director by the time of the August UCSA Congress.
  • Denea Joseph, a campus organizing director for UCLA, said she is passing out information about the Congress to students and working with volunteers for the event.
  • UCSA Executive Director Marcy Straw said the staff is working on a calendar of events for campaigning on campuses. The staff is also planning for several programs with media outlets and on tracking bills on the UCSA website.
