Delta Gamma and Lambda Chi Alpha joined houses to create a production trifecta of dancing, singing and acting to reveal to the crowd at Spring Sing 2014.
After starting the audition process in the beginning of winter quarter and working diligently on the auditions, choreographies and training, members of the Delta Gamma sorority and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity are ready to unveil their hard work at Friday’s performance.
Nikki Friedman, a second-year world arts and cultures/dance dance and psychology student and director of productions for the group, said she had her doubts about taking on the position of leading the performers.
At first she wasn’t sure of accepting the offer because she knew it would be a big responsibility. Friedman said she turned it down four times before finally accepting the role and being put in charge of the group’s Spring Sing performance.
Her responsibilities included developing the theme, choreographing the entire piece and running all the rehearsals.
“This is actually my first year, so it’s very scary … putting me in charge,” Friedman said. “But there’s some alumni of Spring Sing on my team with me so they definitely helped me through it.”
Friedman’s choreographies were inspired by the production’s music, which features a combination of popular songs. She listened to the songs over and over again to visualize what she, as a member of the audience, would like to see on stage.
“It’s more like the type of dancing you would see at the background of a concert. It’s fun movements,” Friedman said. “I wanted to create a production so that everybody in the audience, no matter where they were, would really love it and feel hyped and excited about all of Spring Sing.”
For Kelsey McKenna, a fourth-year communications studies student, Friday’s performance will be her fourth and final performance at Spring Sing.
McKenna said this year’s Spring Sing performance is different from what Delta Gamma has done in the past. In prior years, the sorority’s performances had more complicated storylines and more of a plot, but this year, there’s not so much a storyline but an overall theme, giving it a different vibe.
Although Friday marks Delta Gamma’s first time working with Lambda Chi Alpha, the members of the fraternity were enthusiastic and committed to the frequent rehearsals and overall process of Spring Sing.
“It’s been really fun. We wanted to try something new this year and they’re one of the few fraternities on this campus that are really enthusiastic about participating in things so we knew they would be a really good pair to team up with it,” McKenna said. “They’ve just been fantastic through the whole experience.”
With an overwhelming number of responses to the audition process and an eagerness to participate in this year’s Spring Sing, it has been a long but rewarding process for Delta Gamma and Lambda Chi Alpha.
“I’m just excited to get on stage. We’ve been working so, so hard for months,” McKenna said. “It’s so rare to say that you performed in this amazing event in iconic Pauley Pavilion.”
