Eight UCLA tennis players selected to play in championships

If March Madness wasn’t enough, how about some May madness?

For the UCLA collegiate tennis teams, the upcoming postseason became even more enticing early Wednesday evening. Five UCLA women’s tennis players and three UCLA men’s tennis players were named to compete in the 2014 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. After the team competition, which begins May 15, the singles and doubles tournaments for both men’s and women’s tennis will take place from May 21-26.

From the 64-person women’s singles tournament, junior Robin Anderson is seeded No. 2, freshman Jennifer Brady is seeded No. 8, junior Chanelle Van Nguyen is seeded No. 9-16 and sophomore Kyle McPhillips is unseeded. The 32-team women’s doubles tournament has Anderson and Brady as the top seeds, and the pairing of McPhillips and sophomore Catherine Harrison as unseeded.

Conversely, in the 64-person men’s singles tournament, senior Clay Thompson is seeded No. 1, junior Marcos Giron is seeded No. 2 and freshman Mackenzie McDonald is unseeded. Giron and McDonald will also take part in the 32-team men’s doubles tournament, though as an unseeded pair.
