As a crowd gathered in the main room of the Treehouse apartment complex, a venue within the Westwood Village music scene, the vocalist of The Ten Thousand, alumnus Kevin Daye, brought an energetic presence to the stage. In a set reminiscent of the heavy guitar riffs and vocals of Rage Against the Machine but with more of a melodic approach to vocals, the five musicians performed after an impressive opening set by the funk, hip-hop four-piece Atomic Walrus.
Alongside Daye, bassist Nathan Kersey-Wilson stayed on beat with Garrett Harney’s drums, providing a deep contrast to Dylan Robin’s high-pitched guitar licks. The cozy room allowed listeners a close-up view of Satoru Yamamoto’s work on the keyboard as his buzzing riffs tessellated with the sounds of the drums, bass and electronic guitar. The set was filled with new tracks, “Leave Home” and “Beg for Mercy,” that Daye said the band had been working hard on in the past month.
