ASUCLA Board of Directors meeting recap: April 27

Associated Students UCLA is a multimillion-dollar organization that provides student services and activities that the university does not fund. It oversees the Undergraduate Students Association Council, Graduate Students Association, Communications Board, campus services and enterprises.

PROPOSALS

  • The ASUCLA Board of Directors unanimously approved a new philanthropy policy to determine which organizations they should provide funding for.
  • The board also unanimously approved a $75,000 capital expenditure to relocate Tsunami Sushi & Noodles to Avenue A on the Ackerman Union A-Level.

STORE

  • March was a reasonably good month, said Bob Williams, executive director of ASUCLA. They were $34,000 off budget, partially because of maintenance costs from the previous month.
  • For their e-commerce sales, ASUCLA exceeded their financial goals, Williams said.
  • The first floor of Ackerman Union did well in March, but A-Level did not do as well, Williams said.
  • The service division missed the mark by $5,000.
  • The Student Union had a positive contribution of $13,000.
  • BearWear and book sales are down, Williams said.
  • At the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at USC, the bookstore made $23,000 at its booth.
  • Williams said he met with Apple, and the company is going to help ASUCLA think of strategies to improve their book sales.
  • Store has sold 641 shirts with the new T-shirt design and earned $2,500 for UniCamp.
  • May 21, the Sizzlin’ Summer Sale, is the last big sale of the year.
  • The store will bring back the UCLA International Clothing pop-up shop from May 12 to June 1.
  • The UCLA Clothing International company opened a store in Melbourne, Australia earlier this month.
  • Six reclining chairs were installed in the upstairs ASUCLA lounge, but one was damaged and sent back for repairs.

FOOD

  • Café Synapse is doing better but still has a negative contribution.
  • The North Campus restaurant earned more this past month than it did during the same month last year.
