USAC Recap – April 8

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council unanimously appointed Alexander Lee, a fourth-year history student and former assistant Community Service commissioner, as the new Community Service commissioner.

  • The council approved contingency programming allocations with a 7-0-2 vote.

  • The council voted to not withdraw their approval of the current elections calendar with a 4-6-1 vote.

  • The council voted to unanimously put a fee referendum that would increase funding for the arts by raising student fees on the spring elections ballot.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Andrea Swanson, a second-year philosophy student, to the USAC Judicial Board.

Special Presentations

  • Members of the student group Furnish the Homeless presented to the council about their ongoing work of donating used furniture from Westwood apartments to transitional housing for people who were previously homeless.

  • Proponents for the Arts Restoring Humanity referendum presented their referendum to the council in an effort to have the council place it on the spring 2014 elections ballots.

  • Multiple transfer students presented about a referendum calling for a new transfer representative USAC position be placed on the spring 2014 elections ballot. The referendum would change the Associated Students UCLA and Undergraduate Students Association Constitution.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino announced a formal partnership with the Fowler Museum to put on a symposium event later this month for LA2050. Joanino also said the BruinCard redesign winners were announced last weekend.

  • USAC Internal Vice President Avi Oved said the USACLive! streaming of weekly meetings started Tuesday and that the video recordings will be archived on YouTube. Oved also said he is going to the White House Friday along with Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich, to talk about sexual assault prevention and the Circle of 6 app.

  • USAC External Vice President Maryssa Hall said she will be going to the Los Angeles City Hall with UCLA and other local college students to lobby L.A. leaders about instituting an oil severance tax.

  • USAC Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office will be holding a Stress Free Day during Week 5 and a townhall about a diversity-related general education requirement during Week 3.

  • USAC Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said she is working to have mental health and sexual assault resources listed on course syllabi. She also discussed some upcoming events that are part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

  • USAC General Representative Sunny Singh said his office interns will be having a “Throwback Thursday” volleyball game with the men’s volleyball team this week. Singh also said tickets for Saturday’s Holi event will be on sale in Wilson Plaza this week.
