Several UCLA teaching assistants and other graduate student employees will cancel discussion sections and office hours Thursday as part of a one-day strike against the University of California.
The UC Student-Workers Union, UAW Local 2865, which represents about 12,000 academic student workers in the UC, is going on strike for two days this week to protest alleged unfair practices committed by the University. The union has been negotiating a new contract with the University since July.
The union’s members have said they are angry the UC will not negotiate the issue of large class sizes and an 18-quarter limit on teaching assignments. The University has said it does not comment on the details of collective bargaining negotiations and that it hasn’t done anything wrong.
There are 1,921 members of UAW 2865 who work at UCLA, according to the UC. But it is not likely all its members will strike.
UAW 2865 is one of two UC unions that have yet to reach agreement over contracts with the University.
