USAC Recap – April 1

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students

Agenda

  • With a 10-0-1 vote, the council allocated $1,500 in discretionary funds to cover the costs of promotional materials for the 7,000 in Solidarity campaign against sexual assault.
  • The council approved this quarter’s Undergraduate Students Association Council and Associated Students’ UCLA Board of Directors Programming Fund allocations with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council approved a Constitutional Review Committee bylaw amendment in a 10-0-1 vote.
  • With a 9-0-2 vote, the council allocated $1,000 in funds for Ally Week.
  • USAC decided to start archiving video recordings of their meetings on their YouTube channel. The Internal Vice President’s office plans to start live streaming USAC meetings next week.

Special presentations

  • Financial Supports Commissioner Lauren Rogers said that 50 students were able to receive $200 for textbooks this academic year through her office’s textbook scholarship program.
  • Community Service Commissioner Omar Arce presented to council about the John Sarvey Award, a $1,000 award given to students for demonstrating a commitment to volunteer and leadership service. He said that students can apply on the Community Service Commission website until April 20.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich gave a presentation about Bruin Health Week, a weeklong event from April 21 to 27 geared toward educating students about living healthier lifestyles and providing resources for health-related issues. Badalich added that The Clothesline Project event, which aims to encourage dialogue about sexual violence, will take place April 8.

Officer reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said an application is currently available for students who want to serve on a committee tasked with finding a candidate for a new vice chancellor of equity, diversity and inclusion. Joanino added that council held a debriefing meeting over spring break to discuss a recent controversial vote on a divestment resolution. At the debriefing meeting, councilmembers discussed strategies for future councils to better handle external media pressure.
  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said that his office will be hosting the Spring Activities Fair this Thursday, where attendees can learn about different student groups on campus.
  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said that she wants to reach out to other offices to co-program events that would call for reforms of the California Master Plan for Higher Education. The plan provides a set of guidelines aimed at increasing student enrollment in colleges.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said that his office plans to host a town hall meeting next week to discuss the creation of a diversity-related general education requirement, but specifics of the time and date of the event are still being confirmed.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said that she is considering plans to institutionalize efforts made by the 7,000 in Solidarity campaign through the creation of a task force housed in USAC. Badalich said she is also considering proposing bylaw changes to make combating sexual assault, reforming sexual assault policies and putting on educational programming regarding sexual violence as part of mandatory Student Wellness Commission responsibilities.
