Shabazz Muhammad’s father sentenced after loan controversy

Ron Holmes, the father of former UCLA basketball player Shabazz Muhammad, was sentenced to 37 months in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit fraud in December, as originally reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The sentencing comes just a day after the release of a BuzzFeed report that Holmes used Muhammad’s future NBA salary to secure up to $300,000 in loans he used for everyday funding.

Holmes was sentenced to house arrest in May after he was charged with allegedly running a mortgage fraud scheme that involved using fake names and bank statements to secure mortgages in Los Angeles County.

Muhammad sat out the first three games of his freshman season at UCLA after the NCAA ruled Muhammad received illegal benefits to pay for recruiting trips. A Wednesday Associated Press report indicated that Muhammad’s status as an amateur athlete during his time at UCLA hinges upon whether or not he knew about his father’s loan practices.
