UCLA lands five-star QB recruit Josh Rosen

Five-star quarterback recruit Josh Rosen announced a verbal commitment to UCLAon Thursday. Rosen ranks as Rivals.com’s No. 1 prospect at the position in the class of 2015. The Bruins have not captured a five-star quarterback prospect since Brett Hundley’s arrival in 2011.

With Hundley a de facto entrant in the 2015 NFL Draft, Rosen figures to compete with current redshirt freshman Asiantii Woulard for starter’s reps next calendar year. The high school junior intends to graduate next January and be available for spring practice in 2015.

Rosen expressed in an interview with ESPN that UCLA had for months been a frontrunner for his commitment. Any doubts raised by a recent trip to the University of Michigan were erased Thursday.

Three UCLA hats sat atop a table in a conference room at his high school in a play on a recruiting announcement tradition. Rosen perhaps tipped his cap, and hand, as to a final decision when he visited UCLA’s Spaulding Field on Wednesday, throwing with Hundley and NFL quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Tim Tebow.

Rosen’s choice to play in Westwood will keep the quarterback in Los Angeles County. The two-year starter led Bellflower’s St. John Bosco High School to the CIF Open Division title last December.

Rosen marks the third player from St. John Bosco to commit to the Bruins in under two months. Incoming safety Jaleel Wadood and defensive end Jacob Tuioti-Mariner each signed letters of intent for UCLA in early February as part of the 2014 recruiting class.
