UC Berkeley passes bill after UCLA, USC receive offensive fliers

The undergraduate student government at University of California, Berkeley, passed a bill Wednesday in support of Asian Pacific Islander communities at UCLA and USC, after Asian American departments at both campuses received racist and sexist fliers earlier this month, according to the Daily Californian.

Nearly three weeks ago, UCLA’s Asian American Studies Center and USC’s Asian Pacific American Student Services received anonymous fliers containing numerous racist and sexist slurs directed at members of Asian and Mexican communities and white men and women.

In response to the fliers, Asian Pacific Islander student groups at UCLA and USC have called for support from university administrators, the leaders of the UC and other students from different college campuses.

The Associated Students of University of California bill, SB 18, asks that ASUC be in solidarity with the communities at USC and UCLA. The bill also calls for ASUC President DeeJay Pepito to relay the issues addressed in the resolution to UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirk. It also calls for the ASUC External Affairs Vice President Safeena Mecklai to request for the UC Student Association to endorse the statements brought forth by students from USC and UCLA in response to the fliers.
