Letter to the Editor: Desires for Prop. 13 reform are misinformed

In her article “Submission: Prop. 13 reform needed to resolve UC tuition woes,” in Opinion on Jan. 3, Andrea Chu cites her financial problems as a good reason for Proposition 13 “reform.” Well, Ms. Chu, join the club, many of whom have been “members” since you were probably in middle school.

You propagate some major misinformation to state that Proposition 13 will freeze property taxes at 1975 levels. It might give you second thoughts to know that it allows for annual increases of 1 percent. Hence, we are now paying property taxes that are a bit higher than the 1975 levels. Do the arithmetic. It is now 1 percent times 39 years. And please note that each 1 percent increase is, time and again, on top of all the previous years’ 1 percent.

And, do you not realize that, unless Proposition 13 is destroyed, which is the ultimate goal of the financiers of your objective, you will be the beneficiary of Proposition 13 when you are close to your golden years?
