ASUCLA joins Typhoon Haiyan relief effort with UCLA Store donations

Associated Students UCLA will donate 10 percent of UCLA Store purchases made between Monday and Sunday of this week to Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts.

The ASUCLA Board of Directors voted to approve the 10 percent donation proposal at its meeting on Jan. 24. The board previously turned down a request from UCLA’s Typhoon Haiyan Relief Committee to automatically match about $6,000 of the committee’s accepted donations.

Instead, ASUCLA will donate 10 percent of purchases, up to $6,000.

Only purchases from customers with a specific coupon will be put toward the donation. Students can get coupons from the customer service window of the UCLA Store and from UCLA restaurants or by printing them out from the ASUCLA Facebook page.

To inform students that coupons are available, Undergraduate Students Association Council President John Joanino – who is a member of the relief committee – said he would send out fliers and a campuswide email about the donation campaign.

Joanino said he is looking forward to working with ASUCLA in this endeavor despite the initial roadblock in donations.

“Any kind of collaboration is positive,” Joanino said. “This was never about matching the amount (of donations) – this was about finding ways to help people in need.”
