UCLA Athletics received a $1-million donation from former UCLA men’s tennis player John Mapes and his wife Carrie to fund four scholarships for student-athletes.
“We are delighted to be associated with UCLA Athletics and to make an impact on future generations of student-athletes,” Mapes said in a statement. “These scholarships will also provide perpetual support to our coaches as they develop our student-athletes into champions in the classroom, in competition and in the community.”
The contribution, part of the Four Deep Scholarship Endowment Campaign founded by Bob Wilson in 1988, will go toward establishing four total scholarships for athletes who play football, men’s basketball or men’s tennis. The $1-million donation also helps offset the $12 million that UCLA projects it will have to pay in athlete scholarships in 2014.
Donated in the form of an endowment, the money will be invested, allowing the income generated to help continue to pay for scholarships in the future.
“As a direct result of this gift, the Mapes family has ensured that generations of student-athletes will have an opportunity to study and compete at UCLA – an opportunity that may not have existed otherwise,” said Athletic Director Dan Guerrero in a statement. “For that, I cannot thank them enough.”
