USAC Recap – Jan. 7

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • Councilmembers allocated about half of the council’s remaining surplus funds. USAC voted to give about $78,500 of its approximately $152,000 to fund specific office initiatives. The council allocated $40,000 to fund Jazz Reggae Festival, about $14,000 to fund United States Student Association registration fees, $4,000 to fund the Jack Benny and Spencer Tracy Awards and $15,500 to fund the creation of a safety app specific to UCLA students.

  • USAC approved contingency programming allocations with a 7-0-5 vote.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he met with multiple UCLA administrators to talk about office initiatives. He said Associated Students UCLA decided not to match funds students raised for Typhoon Haiyan. Joanino also said his office, along with the Daily Bruin and On-Campus Housing Council, plan to host a community forum during week three.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office plans to hold an Off-Campus Living Fair on Jan. 16 in the Ackerman Union Grand Ballroom for students to learn about their off-campus housing options.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said she will be attending a University of California Student Association Board of Directors meeting Jan. 11-12. Hall also said she still plans to bring a resolution calling for University of California schools to divest from private prisons.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office plans to host an online education summit on Feb. 27. He also said he is looking for tutoring services to help with an academic how-to guide his office is developing.

  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said there will be a blood drive Jan. 14-16 at the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center. Badalich also said 7,000 in Solidarity, a campaign against sexual assault at UCLA, will host a “consent week” during week four.

  • Community Service Commissioner Omar Arce said his office is currently accepting applicants to, and planning for, its spring break community service program, Alternative Breaks.
