ASUCLA Board of Directors meeting recap: Dec. 6

Associated Students UCLA is a multimillion-dollar organization that provides student services and activities that the university does not fund and oversees the Undergraduate Students Association Council, Graduate Students Association, Communications Board, campus services and enterprises.

PROPOSALS

 

  • The Facilities Commission subcommittee suggested selling a reusable mug selection at ASUCLA coffee shops, said Bob Williams, executive director of ASUCLA.
  • The Student Engagement subcommittee is considering having a survey to determine student interest in sleep pods, said Jordan Wong, a third-year international development studies student and undergraduate representative on the board.
  • The Service Committee is reviewing different ideas for the sleep pods based on the Finance Committee’s suggestions.
  • UCLA Student Media, which includes the Daily Bruin, UCLA Radio and several student magazines, owes ASUCLA $176,000. The board approved the deferral of $180,000 only through January.
  • The board did not approve the proposal to match student fundraising of about $6,000 for Typhoon Haiyan Relief efforts with ASUCLA funds. The board sent USAC’s Relief Committee a letter asking that it work with a newly created committee to help come up with fundraising ideas that ASUCLA could support.

 

UCLA STORE

  • The UCLA Store in Ackerman Union will begin using paper bags instead of plastic bags on Jan. 2.
  • An Alumni Appreciation Day sale will be occur on Saturday.
  • The store sold 926 units from the temporarily offered UCLA International Clothing collection making $50,000 gross revenue. Another international clothing pop-up shop will open the second week of spring quarter.
  • Last year’s win against USC resulted in more UCLA gear sales than this year’s win.
  • Starting Jan. 6, the winning T-shirt of the ASUCLA T-shirt design contest will go on sale. Fifty percent of the net profit for the T-shirts will go to UniCamp, UCLA’s official student charity.
  • Foot traffic has remained high on the first floor of Ackerman Union and low on A-level.
  • A one-page checkout on the ASUCLA store webpage will be launched soon.

 

CONSTRUCTION

  • Panda Express will be under construction for a remodel during winter break to accommodate for the restoration of “The Black Experience,” a mural that began to be revealed in October.
  • Doors will be installed on the Global Viewpoint Lounge during winter break.
  • A new tile floor will be installed in the beauty boutique in Ackerman Union.
  • Wolfgang Puck Express has had some minor leaking problems, which have not affected production and will soon be fixed.
  • Wolfgang Puck Express’ patio is to get heaters, but approval from the fire marshal is needed first.
  • The board approved an additional $100,000 to go toward the construction of the Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center cafe, increasing the cafe’s construction cost from $200,000 to $300,000.
