405 Freeway’s Montana Avenue off-ramp to permanently close

The Montana Avenue exit off of the northbound 405 Freeway will close permanently by Monday morning, officials said.

The change is part of an ongoing construction project that is meant to ease traffic on the 405 Freeway by adding a lane and rebuilding several on- and off-ramps.

The additional lane would have significantly shortened the off-ramp onto Montana Avenue, making it unsafe because drivers would not have enough time to decelerate before reaching the street, said Dave Sotero, a spokesman for Los Angeles Metro.

Construction workers will add several lanes to the Sunset Boulevard off-ramp and Wilshire Interchange in order to offset the loss of the Montana off-ramp, Sotero said.

Additionally, the northbound 405 Freeway will close from midnight to 5 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday as part of the construction, Sotero said.

On Monday, all five lanes on the northbound freeway will be closed from Santa Monica Boulevard to Wilshire Boulevard, and on Tuesday they will be closed from Wilshire Bloulevard to Moraga Drive, Sotero said.

During the freeway closure, workers will realign lanes to accommodate for work on the freeway median, Sotero said. Workers completed a similar job on the southbound 405 Saturday night, he added.

The Sunset Boulevard ramp will open for the first time in four months by Monday morning at 6 a.m.
