Chilly Ribbons, a new frozen dessert eatery that features what the owners have termed “shaved snow,” is planning to open in Westwood Village within the next month.

Westwood’s newest addition will open in December on Westwood Boulevard and Broxton Avenue, next to U-mini, said Daniel Kultran, vice president of franchise development for Chilly Ribbons.

Chilly Ribbons differs from shaved ice, ice cream and other frozen desserts by producing the desserts with a self-serve shaver, Kultran said. The self-serve shaver takes blocks of flavored ice and shaves it into thin, wavy strips, called shaved snow.

Because the self-shaver has never appeared in a store before, they are currently still making tweaks to the machine, Kultran said.

Kultran said tweaks were still being made to the snow-shaver, and this was the main obstacle to opening the store in August as originally planned. So, currently, Kultran and the other franchisers involved are decorating and setting up the interior of the location while they wait for the final changes to be made to the serving machine.

Chilly Ribbons offers more than 40 flavors in small, large and teaser sizes, which are priced by weight depending on how many toppings a person uses, Kultran said. The average serving, however, will cost about $4.50, with the teaser costing about $2.50.

Kultran said their desserts have about 100 calories in an average portion before adding toppings.

Ultimately Chilly Ribbons hopes to open fives stores throughout Los Angeles and three stores in San Diego, Kultran said.

Correction: Chilly Ribbons serves a dessert item they term “shaved snow.” The word dessert was misspelled multiple times.
