Consensus five-star men’s basketball recruit Kevon Looney committed to UCLA today, becoming the second 2014 recruit to commit to coach Steve Alford’s program.
The 6-foot-8 power forward out of Milwaukee, Wis. is ranked the No. 13 recruit in the nation by Rivals.com, No. 14 by Scout.com and No. 11 by ESPN.com, making him the highest profile recruit Alford has acquired as UCLA’s coach.
Looney announced his decision in a press conference, donning a UCLA cap to declare his commitment. Looney said that UCLA beat out Tennessee as his top choice, according to Rob Hernandez of the Wisconsin State Journal.
As a high school junior last season, Looney averaged 26.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, 7 blocks, 3.1 assists per game and shot 70 percent from the field. He also earned first team All-State honors in both 2012 and 2013 – his sophomore and junior years respectively.
Scout.com describes Looney’s strengths as rebounding and versatility, noting his ability to dribble well and hit mid-range jump shots.
With the departure of redshirt senior forwards David and Travis Wear, Looney will fill a large void in the front court.
