Speaks Out
What do you feel are the most effective strategies for
protesting for civil rights?
"I think that education and getting the message out to the
masses is the best way to protest an issue. Violence is more of a
negative thing."

"I always find that non-violence works better, because even if
you don’t succeed in every way that you thought you would, you
still look like a good person, and people don’t see you as a
criminal. People are more willing to listen to what you’re
protesting when you approach it peacefully."

"I think that the best way to protest an important issue is
probably not through violence, but having a good sense of what
you’re arguing and having a lot of evidence. Demonstrations,
non-violent, but also not passive, visuals at the gathering, and
written down forms of protest are also effective."

"Organized violence – violence with a goal in mind. You can’t
just be violent, you have to be violent with a goal in mind."

"I think the most successful way is to boycott whatever you are
protesting against. Hit them in their pocketbook and make them lose
money."

"I think that communication works best – opening the lines and
talking. Just talking about it and educating others works best.
Anything that has to do with violence is just
counter-productive."
