UCSA anticipates positive relationship with Napolitano

The University of California Student Association said it appreciates UC President Janet Napolitano’s “laudable efforts” to interact with students during her first week in office, though it still maintains its concerns about Napolitano’s leadership over undocumented students.

“The UC Student Association stands in solidarity with students who are concerned with the new leadership, while also recognizing the laudable efforts of UC President Napolitano during her first week in office,” said UCSA President Kareem Aref in a press statement.

According to the statement, UCSA appreciates the letter Napolitano sent to the UC community on her first day of her presidency, in which she said she would be “the strongest advocate possible for the University of California.” UCSA also appreciated how Napolitano met with students on her second day in office.

“I think it’s a good sign that she’s starting to meet with students,” Aref said in an interview. “That being said, I don’t think this is a reason for us to not be cautious, but it’s a good sign.”

Aref said UCSA is already scheduled to meet with Napolitano in the next couple of weeks. He said UCSA hopes to have a positive relationship with Napolitano and that she will continue to collaborate with UC students.
