‘Don Jon’ unable to screen at Bruin Bash

The movie that was scheduled to show at Bruin Bash Sunday night, “Don Jon,” did not play because of technical difficulties.

The students who organized Bruin Bash and members of Relativity Media, which offered UCLA the free sneak preview of the movie, gave different reasons for why the movie did not show.

“Don Jon,” which was written and directed by and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was scheduled to screen in Ackerman Grand Ballroom at 11 p.m. But after the movie repeatedly stopped during the showing, event organizers ended the event around 11:45 p.m., said Jessica Kim, the Campus Events commissioner of the Undergraduate Students Association Council.

Relativity Media publicist Ryan Smith said he was not sure why the movie did not show, but said that an error in the movie’s file or a problem with UCLA’s equipment likely caused the problem.

Student event organizers said a mix-up about the time period the movie was authorized to show prevented them from playing the movie initially.

Kim said that the confusion led to problems with a security code that authorized the movie to play. After getting a different security code and starting the movie, unknown technical difficulties still prevented the movie from playing all the way through, she said.

A report about the event, however, said that there was no miscommunication about the time of the screening, Smith said.

Kim said that she thinks that the Campus Events Commission did everything it could to make sure the movie ran on time.

“We did test runs of it and we did everything on our part,” Kim said. “It was just bad luck.”

Event organizers and members of Relativity Media are currently working together to schedule a new time to show “Don Jon” to UCLA students before the movie releases.

  1. I believe that there is an error in this report. The event never ended at 11:45. Up until midnight (which was the time when I angrily left after hearing bad jokes and no apology), the event organizers never told us that the showing was cancelled. They had said that if Don Jon doesn’t play, they will play The Ring, the only movie they had. That commissioner is a liar.
