USAC Recap – Aug. 20

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said his office is working on multiple initiatives, including the 7,000 In Solidarity campaign against sexual assault and a campaign to encourage UCLA and the University of California to divest from fossil fuels.

  • Carlos Quintanilla, Internal Vice President Avi Oved’s chief of staff, said the Internal Vice President’s office is working on several safety initiatives for UCLA, such as organizing student ride-alongs with UCPD. He said the office is also working on putting together diversity workshops for this school year.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said her office is planning the Student of Color Conference at UCLA and trying to get Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to come speak at the conference.

  • Zoe Sheppard, Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho’s chief of staff, said all the appointment applications that go through the Academic Affairs Commission for review have been submitted to the Appointments Review Committee.

Special Presentations

  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich and USAC President John Joanino presented to the council about their campaign against sexual assault, called 7,000 In Solidarity. Some of the campaign’s initiatives include initiating long-term research on sexual assault, increasing reporting of sexual assaults and improving bystander education.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Hossain Albgal, a fourth-year economics and communication studies student, to the Associated Students UCLA Communications Board, which overseas Student Media at UCLA, including the Daily Bruin.

  • Moneel Chand, a third-year mechanical engineering student, was unanimously appointed by the council to the Student Fee Advisory Committee.
