Incoming freshman Alison Lee and rising junior Erynne Lee of UCLA women’s golf both participated in the U.S. Women’s Amateur tournament in Charleston, S.C., last week.
Erynne Lee was eliminated in the first round, while Alison Lee advanced to the semifinals only to lose to Emma Talley, the eventual tournament winner.
Both players advanced to match play after qualifying by placing in the top 64 after 36 holes.
In match play, two golfers compete only against each other and the winner advances to the next round. Rather than the number of strokes determining the winner of each match, the golfer who wins the most holes out of 18, regardless of the number of strokes, advances to the next round.
In the opening round of 64, Erynne Lee, an All-American, was defeated by rising junior Doris Chen of USC. Her loss by one hole eliminated her from the tournament. Alison Lee, meanwhile, won her opening round match by three holes and advanced to the next round.
In the round of 32, Alison Lee again won her match, but by a much closer margin. Rather than the usual 18 holes, it took Lee 19 to come out on top after both golfers were still even after the first 18 holes.
Lee needed only 16 holes to get the victory in the round of 16, however, winning the match by three holes to advance to the quarterfinals. She improved on that score in the quarterfinals, winning that match by four holes.
Lee faltered in her semifinal match against Emma Talley, a rising sophomore for Alabama. Lee fell behind early and was trailing by four holes at one point, before rallying to tie in the 16th hole.
Lee could not finish off the comeback, however, losing the match by one hole and being eliminated from the tournament. Talley would go on to win the tournament.
