The University of California releases annual compensation report

The University of California released an annual report on last year’s University salaries Wednesday morning. The report includes salary and bonus details for more than 300 University employees who are senior administrators or earn more than $250,000, as well as a database of all UC compensation in 2012.
Last year, the University employed more than 191,000 faculty and staff, in addition to part-time, temporary and student employees.
The UC’s total payroll was about $11.2 billion, a 6 percent increase from 2011. The report attributes the larger payroll to increased research activity and market pressure for higher, more competitive salaries.

According to the report, 24 percent of University compensation in 2012 was funded by the state and by student tuition, compared to 37 percent that was funded by clinical revenue from UC hospitals.
The University’s highest salaries were given to health sciences faculty and athletic coaches. Listed are the University’s 10 highest salaries, according to the database:
  • $2,234,191.48 — UCLA’s Ben Howland, former men’s basketball coach
  • $2,232,151.10 — UCLA’s Dr. Ronald Busuttil, distinguished professor and UCLA Department of Surgery executive chairman
  • $2,146,581.24 — UC Berkeley’s Jeff Tedford, former football coach
  • $2,141,907.00 — UCLA’s Dr. Khalil Tabsh, clinical professor and vice chair of obstetrics and gynecology
  • $1,922,704.62 — UC Berkeley’s Mike Montgomery, head men’s basketball coach
  • $1,883,490.89 — UCLA’s Jim Mora, head football coach
  • $1,465,269.98 — UC San Francisco’s Dr. Timothy McCalmont, professor of clinical pathology and dermatology and co-director of UCSF Dermatopathology Service
  • $1,421,463.73 — UCLA’s Dr. David Feinberg, UCLA Health System president and UCLA Hospital System CEO and associate vice chancellor
  • $1,376,928.61 — UC San Francisco’s Mark Laret, CEO of the UCSF Medical Center
  • $1,357,260.99 — UCLA’s Dr. Abbas Ardehali, professor of surgery and medicine and director of UCLA Heart, Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Programs
