The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.
Agenda
- The council unanimously approved USAC’s 2013-2014 budget.
- The council unanimously voted to extend Cynthia Jasso’s term as finance committee chair until July 15.
Officer Reports
- USAC President John Joanino said he is in the process of planning a sexual assault awareness campaign with Savannah Badalich, USAC student wellness commissioner. The two officers plan to reach out to the Office of Residential Life about the campaign.
- Internal Vice President Avi Oved’s chief of staff, Nicole Vestal, said the office is working with the company Guardly, which builds mobile safety apps, to create a UCLA mobile safety app.
- External Vice President Maryssa Hall said her office held a day of action after UCLA’s commencement ceremony on June 14 to educate students and families about student loan interest rates, which are set to increase July 1.
- Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said he has made all of the appointments for his office.
Special Presentations
- Representatives from UCLA Housing and Hospitality Services presented to the council about the construction of the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference and Guest Center. UCLA is building the center to improve its status as a research institution and allow conferences to be held on campus. The center’s construction is set to start this summer, and its cost is estimated at $152 million.
- USAC President John Joanino and External Vice President Maryssa Hall presented to the council about Governor Jerry Brown’s revised budget and the Middle Class Scholarship Act.
- Cynthia Jasso, the USAC finance committee chair, presented to the council about the involvement of USAC general representatives in the finance committee. Jasso said putting general representatives on the committee will not solve the problem of USAC’s lack of involvement in the finance committee and funding decisions. The council decided to table the discussion because only one of three general representatives was present at the meeting and other council members were also absent.
