A fifth victim of Friday’s Santa Monica shooting died this morning, according to a statement from UCLA Health System.
The woman, 26-year-old Marcela Franco, was taken to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Friday in critical condition after she was shot while driving near 20th Street and Pearl Street in Santa Monica, according to police officials.
The death toll from the shooting is now up to six people, including the the alleged gunman, John Zawahri. He allegedly opened fire at several locations in Santa Monica, including Santa Monica College, before being shot and killed by police.
Carlos Franco, a 68-year-old employee of Santa Monica College, was driving the same car and died shortly after. Franco is the father of Marcela Franco, according to Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis.
Another woman was treated at the UCLA medical center shortly after the shooting and died later that day. A third woman was released today in good condition, according to the statement.
Police later found Zawahari’s brother and father, Christopher and Samir Zawahari, respectively, dead inside their Santa Monica home, which had been set on fire, police said.
