University of California admissions data released this morning by the UC Office of the President shows an increase in the number of first-year black students admitted to UCLA for fall 2007.
With 392 black students offered admissions, this demographic accounts for 3.4 percent of all admitted students ““ up from last year’s 2.1 percent.
This year’s admit pool was the first group of students to be selected under the new holistic admissions process, which assigns the applicant a score after reviewing all sections of the application as a whole.
Increasing diversity on campus ““ especially the presence of underrepresented minorities ““ has been an ongoing concern for UCLA community members and campus officials.
According to a UCLA press release, 16.6 percent of new admits are underrepresented minorities, seeing an increase from last year’s 14.4 percent.
