Hockey team off to 3-0 start
There is nothing like a couple of wins to get a team started off
on the right foot.
That is exactly what the UCLA ice hockey team got with 6-3 and
3-2 wins over Oregon this weekend at Healthsouth Training
Center.
The sweep gives the Bruins a three-game winning streak to start
off their season after last weekend’s 12-3 defeat of Western
Washington.
The Oregon Ducks didn’t know what hit them as the Bruins
scored five of their six goals in the opening 12 minutes of the
first period on Friday’s matchup.
Bruin captain James Campbell was the heart of UCLA’s
offensive attack, recording a hat trick in the first period
barrage. Campbell finished out the Bruin scoring with his fourth
goal in the second period.
Forward David Cokley and rookie Derek Pfister also contributed
to the damage with first period goals of their own, while an
injured Ben Theule had three assists during the night.
Behind a young Bruin offense, UCLA goaltender Michael Michelena
gave up just three goals on 38 Oregon shots.
Saturday’s showdown between the two teams was a different
story, as an aggressive and physical Oregon squad showed up to
play. The Ducks kept the game scoreless until early in the second
period, when Theule took advantage of the powerplay to make it 1-0
UCLA.
After missing most of the second period due to a vicious hit,
Cokley took his revenge on the Oregon defense, scoring in the
second and third period to give the Bruins what would be the
winning goal.
It was a little too close for comfort for Bruin fans as the
Ducks, down by one, had the opportunity to tie things up in the
final seconds of the third period.
Despite pulling their goalie on a powerplay, Oregon
couldn’t make things happen with their two man advantage,
giving UCLA it’s third straight victory.
The Bruins will host San Jose State Friday and Utah Saturday at
Healthsouth Training Center in El Segundo. Game time is 9 p.m.
The club update runs every Thursday. Club presidents can send
