Daily Bruin receives eight Society of Professional Journalist regional awards

The Daily Bruin received third place awards for best newspaper and best website in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence regional awards.

At Saturday’s awards luncheon in Las Vegas, The Bruin earned awards in eight categories, half of which recognized online reporting work. The awards were for colleges in California, Nevada, Guam, Hawaii and the Mariana Islands.

First place:

Best All-Around Radio Newscast (Staff for Long Story Short)

Online In-Depth Reporting (Byron Lutz and Kelly Zhou for Elections 2012)

Sports column writing (Ryan Eshoff)

Second place:

Editorial Cartooning (Kara Yasui)

Online Feature Reporting (Byron Lutz and Kelly Zhou for Registration Issue Dorm Room)

Third place:

Best Affiliated Website (Staff)

Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper (Staff)

Feature Writing (James Barragan for Miles of Memories)

First-place regional winners will advance to judging at the national level. National winners will be announced in the coming months.
