SANTA BARBARA “”mdash; The Phi Gamma Delta fraternity held its
20th annual soccer tournament this past weekend hosting fraternity
and sorority teams from UCLA, UCSB, Cal State Northridge and Cal
Poly San Louis Obispo.
The fraternity teams representing UCLA were: Sigma Alpha
Epsilon, Theta Xi, Zeta Beta Tau, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi and
Sigma Pi. The participating sororities were: Delta Gamma, Alpha
Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta and Gamma Phi Beta.
For two decades this tournament has been a chance for the most
talented soccer players in the Greek system to showcase their
talent and engage in friendly competition, while benefitting the
Jack Canfield Chicken Soup Fund.
The tournament has traditionally been a big source of pride for
both fraternities and sororities, and this year the competition was
as tough as ever. Unfortunately, Sunday’s semifinals and
championship games were rained out.
On Saturday the round robin portion of the tournament was played
for the seeding of Sunday’s single elimination championship
round. From the field of UCLA teams, Sigma Alpha Epsilon played
extremely well and won both of its games, beating Sigma Phi Epsilon
from Santa Barbara and Theta Xi from UCLA. Sunday’s rain kept
the tournament from advancing any further, but Sigma Alpha Epsilon
was the only team from UCLA to make the semifinals.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon was scheduled to play the lone team from
CSUN and the winner of that game was to play the winner of Sigma Nu
(UCSB) and Phi Gamma Delta (UCSB) game. In the women’s
bracket of the tournament, Kappa Alpha Theta (UCLA), Alpha Phi
(UCLA) and Delta Gamma (UCLA) also played impressively.
Sunday’s cloudy skies and rain put the tournament on hiatus
until a later date, when the true champions can be decided.
The games are tentatively rescheduled for the weekend of the
Inter-Sorority Volleyball Tournament which will take place April
25-27 in Santa Barbara. Despite the inclement weather, the weekend
was a great success and provided some UCLA students a chance to
invade Isla Vista and downtown Santa Barbara, as well as play
soccer on UCSB’s spacious intramural field.
It was also an opportunity for the Greek system to help raise
money for a good cause. Although the rain put a slight damper on
the weekend, it was still an enjoyable experience for fans and
players alike.
