School of Law receives $1.025 million to establish scholarships

The UCLA School of Law received a gift of $1.025 million from an alumna to create the Justice Joan Dempsey Klein Scholarships in Law, according to a UCLA statement released Wednesday.

The donation came from Klein and her husband, Conrad Lee Klein.

Joan Dempsey Klein, who graduated from the law school in 1954, is a presiding justice of the California Court of Appeals’ Los Angeles district. She is also the court’s first female presiding justice, according to UCLA Newsroom.

“As I have said many times, my law school education at UCLA gave me a life – and a good life it has been,” Klein said in a statement.

The scholarship will be given out to UCLA law students who demonstrate financial need, have excelled in their academics and show a strong commitment to advocating for gender equality, according to the statement.

Some students said they appreciated the extra support.

“I think it is fantastic. … We really appreciate any scholarships – especially when the UC raises tuition fees,” said Dan Tully, a second-year law student. “Scholarships make it possible for students to pursue an interest in law.”

Officials from the law school could not be reached for comment.
