Frazier hearing delayed

The preliminary hearing for a suspect shot in an altercation
with a university police officer Oct. 5 in Kerckhoff Hall was
postponed Friday to give the defense more time to prepare for
trial.

John Raphling, the public defender representing Willie Davis
Frazier, said he needs more information before proceeding.

Medical reports from the UCLA Medical Center where Frazier was
treated are among the items Raphling said he needs.

Raphling and Deputy District Attorney Frank Tavelman agreed to
return to court Dec. 1.

The original Oct. 29 hearing was postponed when Raphling asked
for more reports and evidence.

Police have turned over an audio recording Officer Terrence
Duren had on his uniform during the altercation with Frazier.

Police say Duren confronted Frazier, who was trespassing in the
second-floor Kerckhoff Hall study lounge. A physical altercation
ensued and Duren, reportedly fighting for his life, shot
Frazier.

Frazier, a 52-year-old transient, pleaded not guilty to two
counts of assault and one count of removing an officer’s
weapon.
