Club sports update

Golf

Members of the UCLA Club Golf team will be intensifying their efforts this month in preparation for the club’s travel team tryouts. Those that make the competition squad will head to Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Club in early February for the season’s first regional qualifying tournament. Although its season is just getting started, the team stays engaged in the golf world year-round. During fall quarter, the team volunteered at the World Challenge, an event put on by Tiger Woods to benefit his charitable foundation, which bears his name.

Men’s lacrosse

The men’s lacrosse team has just one month left until its season opener against the University of San Diego. The game against the Toreros will kick off a busy month of competition. February’s events will also include an alumni game and the 2013 Pac-12 Men’s Lacrosse Shootout, which brings together club lacrosse teams from all the conference schools. Because men’s lacrosse is not an NCAA sport at many schools, teams competing in the shootout are normally split across fourclub conferences.

Men’s rugby

The men’s rugby season began in October, but fall quarter’s competition was primarily comprised of sevens rugby, a modified version of the sport featuring smaller teams and shorter games. Winter quarter brings the start of the team’s regular season, which includes games nearly every weekend and a postseason beginning in April. The end of April marks the Varsity Cup, a multi-day tournament featuring teams from around the country, followed by the Collegiate Rugby Championship just a few weeks later in Philadelphia.

Women’s lacrosse

When competition begins in February, the women’s lacrosse team will split its squad across the Southwest, with the “A” team taking on the University of Arizona and the “B” team participating in the Santa Barbara Shootout. These events will be the Bruins’ first competition under newly hired head coach Paige Lin, a former four-year starter on American University’s lacrosse team. Lin will aim to take the team even further than its record-breaking finish last year, which saw four Bruins named to the Division One All-America first team for the first time in club history.

Cycling

Although the cycling team has been training for some time, with fall quarter events including a 100-mile “century” ride, the athletes took advantage of winter break by heading to Borrego Springs for an intensive training camp. The team will continue to compete in races and events as its season builds toward national competitions at the end of the school year.
