Student robbed on Kelton Avenue early Friday morning

A UCLA student was robbed near the 600 block of Kelton Avenue early Friday morning, according to university police.

At about 1:30 a.m., the student was walking northbound on Kelton Avenue when a man came up to her and tried to take her belongings from her hand, according to a UCPD report released Friday. When she resisted, the man reportedly slapped her in the face and took her cellphone, driver’s license and credit cards before fleeing northbound in a white minivan.

There were about five other people in the car, which had California license plates, according to the statement.

No injuries were reported.

The man is described in the report as black, 6 feet and in his early 20s, with short hair, a dark complexion and a medium build. He was clean-shaven and wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans at the time of the incident.

Police recommend students always stay aware of their surroundings and use UCPD’s community service officer escort service to avoid walking alone at night. If in a robbery situation, a student should comply with the person’s requests and obtain a detailed description of the person.

University police are currently investigating the robbery. Anyone with information about the incident should call UCPD at (310) 825-1491.
