UCLA athletics is trying to catch up in the facilities arms race
of the Pac-10.
In an effort to upgrade its facilities, much like Oregon and
Arizona already have, UCLA’s training facility will be
renovated.
UCLA has already completed the demolition of the south wing of
the old Acosta Training Center, and the project, estimated to be
completed in January 2004, will cost the university
$14,232,000.
The new training center will be two stories high. The first
floor, which will be called the Knapp Building, will house the
football facilities. The second floor will be a varsity locker room
for both women and men in a variety of sports.
The north wing has already started its renovation process and
will house a rehabilitation pool and a larger weight room. Overall,
the facility will quadruple the old Acosta Training Center’s
gross square footage.
Doc Kreis was hired as UCLA’s head strength and
conditioning coach on June 13, replacing Kim Sword.
Kreis will work directly with the football program and oversee
all operations in the new weight room.
“Every team we field spends time in the weight room toward
the end of strength, flexibility, power and, most importantly,
injury prevention,” UCLA associate athletic director Glenn
Toth said in a statement.
