April 30, 2012 – From expression on the basketball courts to the concert halls, Long Story Short reviews a week of what it takes to perform for the crowd. On Friday, Cabal attended the senior music composition recitals and listened to compositions by Edward Ryan and Kirk Naylor, both fourth-year composition students, as well as Emad Borjian, a fifth-year ethnomusiciology student. Then, on Sunday, Erickson watched UCLA’s Spirit Squad auditions. She spoke with Mike Drell, a second-year art history and psychology student about the life of a cheerleader from a male’s shoes, followed by judge Ken Bencomo, who discusses the specifics of qualified cheerleading technique and showmanship.
