International Education Fair to include wider range of resources

UCLA is seeking to inform more students about fellowship and research opportunities abroad.

The UCLA International Institute is reintroducing the International Education Fair on Wednesday for International Education Week.

At the fair, students will be able to learn about opportunities to study or work in a different country through 24 different campus centers and departments. The fair, which will take place on Bruin Walk between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m, will also feature information sessions in the Ackerman Viewpoint Conference Rooms for students interested in learning about specific fellowships, research and study programs.

Though UCLA has held an International Education Week for the past nine years, this is the first time so many campus groups and departments have been involved, said Elizabeth Leicester, the executive director of the UCLA Asia Pacific Center.

“(Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement Cindy Fan) decided she wanted to make a bigger deal and scale up international week overall,” Leicester said. “She decided to make the fair to make the event a wide range of resources.”

Organizers have coordinated and promoted the event for the past five to six months through emails, flyers, videos and social media.

“It’s important for students to know about other countries and the diverse world that we live in,” Leicester said. “Both to be better citizens and to be better working in global society after graduation, no matter what major and career.”

Leicester said she hopes students come to the event to learn about the foreign language and area studies fellowships. These fellowships teach students a language at an advanced level and educates them about different world areas.

She added the government recently made these fellowships available to undergraduate students. Some grants can cover tuition for almost a year.

“Students should have the opportunity to learn about international study opportunities and those for internships, careers and graduate school looking to the future,” Leicester said.
