UCLA was ranked the 14th best university and second best U.S. public university in the World University Rankings 2016-2017 list released by Times Higher Education on Wednesday.
UCLA improved from last year, when it was ranked 16th. The Times Higher Education ranks 980 universities worldwide annually, according to its website. The rankings are based on factors such as research output, international outlook and teaching. There are 79 countries represented in the rankings.

The University of Oxford and California Institute of Technology earned first and second place, respectively. UC Berkeley was ranked the top U.S. public university and tied for 10th place overall.
UCLA scored 82.9 percent for teaching and 89 percent for research, but only 58 percent for international outlook.
