An associate vice chancellor will assume Janina Montero’s role as vice chancellor of Student Affairs after Montero retires July 1.

As vice chancellor, Montero has overseen more than 20 departments and programs that aim to improve students’ quality of life beyond the classroom, including the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center, the UCLA Career Center and other counseling offices.

Monroe Gorden Jr., an associate vice chancellor who has worked in Montero’s office since 2006, will serve as interim vice chancellor for two years while administrators search for a permanent replacement.

As the associate vice chancellor of Student Affairs management, Gorden Jr. managed the Student Affairs budget and supervised the UCLA Registrar’s Office, Student Loan Services and Collections and the Career Center, according to a UCLA statement released Thursday.

Following Montero’s retirement, Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, associate vice chancellor of Enrollment Management, will assume the position of vice provost for Enrollment Management and report to Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh.

In the statement, Waugh said that Copeland-Morgan’s position will focus heavily on integrating more undergraduate students into campus life in the coming years.

Copeland-Morgan will help with enrollment planning, in response to University of California President Janet Napolitano’s plan to increase UC undergraduate enrollment by 10,000 students by the 2018-2019 academic year, according to the statement.

Montero was appointed UCLA’s vice chancellor for Student Affairs in 2003. Prior to her appointment, she served as president of campus life and student services at Brown University.
