Submission: Greek life stands in solidarity with victims of sexual violence

Dear Greek life victims or survivors of sexual and gender-based violence,

We, members of the UCLA community who are in support of survivors and condemn sexual violence, are writing this letter to express our support for you. No one should have to endure these experiences. We believe you, and know that everything you are feeling is valid. We want to help you in your healing processes, whatever those look like for you. We are here in solidarity with you.

There are many resources on- and off-campus that are also available to you. Our Campus Assault Resources and Education Office on-campus is available to all student victims and survivors. The CARE advocate can assist you in a variety of ways, including helping you navigate on- and off-campus reporting options as well as attaining accommodations such as changes in class schedules. Additionally, CARE offers an 8-week trauma-informed “Yoga as Healing” series during winter and spring quarters for any victim or survivor who would like to explore this holistic healing opportunity. You can find more on CARE services by visiting www.careprogram.ucla.edu.

We also recommend the Rape Treatment Center in Santa Monica. They provide free, in-person, emergency medical and counseling services up to five days after an assault. They can also ensure you have free transportation to their facility. For any victim or survivor who experienced an assault more than five days ago, the Rape Treatment Center’s counseling services and crisis hotline are available for you. For off-campus resources, you can reference centers.rainn.org.

Additionally, a new program called Violence Intervention and Prevention has been implemented with UCLA Fraternity & Sorority Relations that will help with providing support and education to chapter members regarding dating and domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. There is so much support on campus and in our community to help you.

As members of Greek life, we always pride ourselves on the importance of “sisterhood” and “brotherhood.” If not paired with respect, these terms are simply words instead of cherished values for which we strive to embody. Our community needs to be one of support and validation as opposed to shame and silence. As part of the next generation of leaders, it is up to us to make a change on our own campus. Only together can we, as Greek Bruins, be at the forefront of change to support our fellow Bruins and to be leaders in uniting against sexual violence.

You are not alone.

With love and support,

USAC President Heather Rosen, Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Iota Chapter

USAC Internal Vice President Heather Hourdequin, Pi Beta Phi, California Delta Chapter
