After an opening week worse than any in recent memory, UCLA baseball started to make the right kind of history Saturday night.
In a 19-0 win over Cal Poly (5-2), No. 15 UCLA (3-3) produced its largest margin of victory since 2008 and its most runs in a game since 2010.
Every starting position player delivered a hit, combining for 18 in total as the Bruins clinched a series victory over the Mustangs.
Redshirt freshman infielder Scott Jarvis, playing third base in his first-ever collegiate start, went 5-for-5 with a walk and four runs scored, but this might not have been the most impressive hitting performance of the night.
Senior second baseman Brett Urabe and redshirt senior right fielder Eric Filia each delivered 3-for-6 lines, with Urabe driving in a team-leading four runs and Filia coming just a home run short of a cycle.
The Bruins also received a dominant pitching effort from sophomore right-hander Griffin Canning, who struck out nine and scattered four hits across seven shutout innings for the best start of the season by a UCLA pitcher.
Junior reliever Moises Ceja relieved Canning and polished off the shutout with three strikeouts in two scoreless frames.
Urabe, who extended his hitting streak to four games, returned to the leadoff spot for the first time since the opening game, sending junior left fielder Brett Stephens to the second spot in the order, where he recorded his first hit of the season.
The series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m. as Bruin freshman Kyle Molnar takes the mound against Mustang sophomore Erich Uelmen.
