Check out a breakdown of the UCLA sports stories you might have missed this week.
Star recruiter
Last Thursday, following National Signing Day 2016, Scout.com named UCLA linebackers and special teams coach Scott White the Pac-12 Recruiter of the Year.
White was pivotal in nabbing Mique Juarez, the No. 1 linebacker in the nation and a consensus five-star recruit from North High School in Torrance, California. His signing brought UCLA up to the No. 2 linebacker class nationwide, behind Alabama. Juarez is the Bruins’ lone five-star in the 2016 recruiting class.
Linebackers Lokeni Toailoa and Krys Barnes, in addition to defensive end Breland Brandt, were also recruited by White. He also brought in four-star kicker J.J. Molson, Army All-American long snapper Johnny Den Bleaker and three-star punter Austin Kent on special teams.
White and the rest of the UCLA football staff helped bring in the No. 7 recruiting class in the country and the best in the Pac-12.
Junior Championships in Oregon
A quartet of freshman runners appeared at last weekend’s 2016 USATF Junior Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon.
The three Bruin men – Colin Burke, Carlos Suarez and Millen Trujillo – ran the 8k race in a field of 30 runners Saturday afternoon. Burke took UCLA’s best mark, placing 10th with a time of 27:16 – a minute off the winning time set by Iowa State’s Thomas Pollard.
Suarez followed just a minute later in 19th place while Trujillo came in 24th.
In the women’s race earlier that day, Jackie Garner was just under two minutes behind the fastest runner, finishing in ninth place in a field of 14.
