The Westwood Community Council meets several times a year to discuss issues relevant to the Westwood Village business and residential community.
Discussion
- Tina Nieto, captain of the Los Angeles Police Department in the West LA Area since May, discussed recent developments in the West LA division of the LAPD.
- She said LAPD is having a lot of commanding officers retire in the coming months with roughly 50 percent being forced out of the department or into the DROP program. Additionally, the quota for new captains without much experience has recently been met.
- Nieto said crime increased in West Los Angeles in every category in 2015, the first rise since 2003. However she added West Los Angeles remains one of the city’s safest neighborhoods. LAPD’s goal this year is to keep Part 1 crimes at 96 occurrences per week in Westwood, Nieto said.
- Steven Sann, chair of the Westwood Community Council, said the annual homeless count in Westwood will take place on Jan 26-28. Participants will meet at 10 p.m. at Westwood Presbyterian Church.
- Eugene Tseng, a representative of state Senator Ben Allen’s office, said a new proposed bill would codify SoCal Gas’ financial responsibility in the Porter Ranch gas leak incident by ensuring that the utility company pays for bills caused by the accident instead of the customers.
