The University of California Student Association is an organization comprised of representatives from the UC student governments. UCSA held their monthly board meeting on Oct. 10 and 11 at UC Riverside.
- UCSA passed a resolution in support of a bill that would create a Wall Street tax on speculation – investment in stocks, property or other ventures – and use the revenue from that tax to lower college tuition across the country, said UCSA President Kevin Sabo.
- The board heard a presentation about the Student in Color Conference, which will take place Nov. 6-8. President Kevin Sabo said the conference tends to host around 1000 students and the board discussed how many students each school can send to the conference.
- The undergraduate committee chose a preliminary logo for the “How are you?” campaign, which aims to reform student mental health services, Sabo said.
- The board passed a resolution calling for UCSA to organize Million Student March on UC campuses. The campaign has three main demands, including free tuition, a cancellation of student debt and a $15 minimum wage for campus workers. The march will take place in November.
- The board also discusses a memorandum of understanding between UCSA and the UC that lays out guidelines for improving student awareness of tuition increases considered by the UC Board of Regents.
- UCSA incorporated feedback from the UC Office of the President to formulate a second draft of the memorandum, Sabo said. An MOU will likely be passed at the November meeting after the second draft is submitted.
- UC and UCSA are still discussing the memorandum and no information is available about when it will be signed, said Rebecca Trounson, a spokesperson for the UC.
