The Daily Bruin won two national awards for best in-depth reporting and best sports column writing from the Society of Professional Journalists’ college newspaper contest, officials announced Wednesday.
The Bruin was also a national finalist for best all-around daily student newspaper.
The two national merits come after Bruin staffers won 19 regional awards in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence competition in April.
Assistant News Editor Katie Shepherd won the national award for in-depth reporting for “Wake of the Storm,” a series funded by the Bridget O’Brien Scholarship Foundation that followed relief and recovery efforts in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Typhoon Yolanda. Sports senior staffer Kevin Bowman won the national award for best sports column writing for his column, “Bo Knows.”
Officials will post the full list of winners on the Society of Professional Journalists website next week.

God how typical..instead of celebrating the accolades you’ve received (which puts you in a position of PRIVILEGE) you should be working to dismantle oppressive hierarchies and promoting authentic expression from racial and sexual minorities. #GetInvolved
