Members of the FIRED UP! slate are focusing on advocating for a diversity course requirement proposal after they were disqualified from running in the upcoming undergraduate student election.

The Undergraduate Students Association Council Election Board ruled the slate’s candidates ineligible because they turned in the hard copies of their candidate packets seven minutes late after the deadline on March 13.

Evelyn Tran, the slate signatory and a fourth-year microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics student, said FIRED UP! members are prioritizing advocacy for faculty to pass the diversity requirement proposal during the ongoing vote, which began Monday. The diversity requirement would mandate undergraduate students in the College of Letters and Science take a course that addresses inequalities based on factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and religion.

She added that the slate plans to release a statement on its disqualification from the USAC election after the diversity requirement vote ends April 10.

FIRED UP!, which consists of several cultural student groups, formed in 2014 and ran seven candidates in the 2014 spring USAC elections. The slate did not win any seats.
