The No. 13 Oregon State University Beavers started their season with 11 straight wins until falling to No. 8 Tennessee. The Bruins tacked a 12th win onto the Beaver’s record after being outgunned in a 65-47 loss Saturday.
Junior guard Nirra Fields scored the 1,000th point of her career in the contest, becoming the 31st player in UCLA school history to do so.
Fields led the Bruins (5-8) in scoring with 20 points, almost half of UCLA’s total points. The Bruins’ 47 points were the lowest of the season.
While the Bruins have been dominant against opponents in rebounds, UCLA was out-rebounded 51-31 against Oregon State (12-1). They were unable to gain the upper hand off the glass both offensively and defensively.
The Beavers shot 39 percent, a low scoring percentage for a top-ranked team. Yet, the Bruins’ 25 percent accuracy was the worst in UCLA’s record all season.
The Bruins struggled to drain field goals throughout the game. Apart from Fields’ 20 points, the second highest scorers, freshmen forward Monique Billings and guard Recee’ Caldwell, tallied six points apiece.
On the other hand, UCLA was able to generate points from 14 of 15 free throw attempts. With an accuracy of 93 percent, it was the best the Bruins have performed from the free throw line. Additionally, the Bruins only committed five turnovers, their lowest this season.
After staining their 1-0 Pac-12 record with the loss to Oregon State, the Bruins play the Beavers’ neighbor, University of Oregon, on Jan. 5.
